Institute for Excellence and Development

Institute for Excellence and Development (i-ED) is a premier 21st Century training institute in Bhutan built on a social enterprise business model of creating social value, not just commercial value. It is based on honest thinking that good for business has to go hand-in-hand with good for society. In other words, good for society can be good for business too if we do it right and it is more sustainable in the long run. Therefore, profit is not a deciding factor in our business decisions – sometimes we have to conduct training even when it is at business loss because it is still good for society, and we did that many times so far. Our Institute also believes that all our training programs must do three things: touch your heart, stimulate your thought, and make you feel good. We understand theories are same everywhere whether in USA, India, Bhutan, or anywhere. But contexts are different, and it is the context that makes real difference. In other words, contents are important but contexts are more important. Therefore, all our trainings are globally competent but locally rooted. While we research our contents from global think tanks and cutting edge technological and skills advancements of the 21stCentury, we train our participants through Bhutanese and International Perspectives. Doing this, we believe, will ultimately not only training participants but Bhutan as a whole.

Training: Smart Classrooms, Smarter Teaching: Interactive Board Integration Training for Teachers

Rationale

Interactive boards are increasingly present in Bhutanese classrooms, yet many teachers use them as little more than a projection screen or an expensive whiteboard — what this programme refers to as the “digital chalk” trap. The gap is rarely about access to hardware; it is about pedagogical confidence and functional literacy. Teachers who have not been trained on the software and interactive tools available to them tend to under-use or avoid the board altogether, particularly once initial technical difficulties arise in front of a class.

This programme is designed to close that gap by combining theoretical grounding in interactive pedagogy with hands-on, experimental practice on the board itself. Participants leave not only understanding why interactive boards matter, but able to independently operate, troubleshoot, and design lessons using one

Objectives

By the end of the two-day programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the pedagogical rationale for interactive board use in the classroom.
  2. Operate the physical components of the SMART Board
  3. Navigate SMART Notebook software to create, save, and edit a lesson file using text, images, shapes, and the Gallery.
  4. Design and build a 15-minute interactive lesson segment appropriate to their own subject area.
  5. Deliver an interactive-board lesson segment to peers and respond to real-time technical issues.
  6. Apply a structured feedback rubric to evaluate interactive board lessons for engagement, tool use, pacing, and clarity.
  7. Independently troubleshoot common day-to-day SMART Board issues encountered in the classroom.
